Why We Support Slat Mill Training

At Pups’n’Pets, we believe in giving dogs healthy, enriching ways to release energy—especially for breeds with high physical needs. Non-motorized slat mills are backed by veterinary science, including a recommendation from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, which highlights

treadmill training as a safe, effective option for high-energy dogs. This method supports stamina, mental focus, and a more balanced lifestyle—without relying on forced exertion or mechanical pressure.

Note: Pups’n’Pets does not currently offer slat mill or treadmill exercise as a service. This information is provided for educational purposes only, to support informed, responsible care for high-energy dogs.

Canine Slat Mills: A Safe and Effective Exercise Solution

What Is a Slat Mill?

A slat mill is a non-motorized, dog-powered treadmill designed specifically for canine use. Unlike motorized treadmills, slat mills allow dogs to control their own pace, providing a self-regulated and safe form of exercise. The belt moves only when the dog moves, stopping immediately when the dog stops, thereby minimizing the risk of overexertion or injury.

Veterinary Endorsement and Research

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recognizes treadmill training as a beneficial tool for canine exercise, particularly when outdoor conditions are unfavorable. Dr. Christopher Frye, Assistant Clinical Professor and Section Chief of the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Service at Cornell, advises that treadmill exercise can be advantageous for dogs that are healthy, overweight, or recovering from injury. He emphasizes the importance of safety measures, such as positive reinforcement, appropriate harnessing, and supervision during treadmill use.

Benefits of Slat Mill Training

  • Self-Paced Exercise: Dogs control their speed, reducing stress and preventing overexertion.
  • Mental Stimulation: Engages dogs mentally, aiding in behavioral balance.
  • Weather-Proof Activity: Provides a consistent exercise option regardless of weather conditions.
  • Rehabilitation Support: Assists in recovery from injuries by offering controlled, low-impact movement.
  • Customized Workouts: Allows for tailored exercise programs to meet individual dog needs.

Safety and Best Practices

To ensure the safe and effective use of slat mills:

  • Professional Assessment: Consult with a veterinarian or canine fitness professional to determine suitability.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Introduce the slat mill gradually, using treats and encouragement.
  • Proper Equipment: Use a well-fitted harness to support natural movement.
  • Supervision: Always monitor your dog during slat mill sessions.
  • Session Management: Start with short durations, gradually increasing as your dog becomes accustomed.
